1. Multiple Sclerosis – Many clinical trials have been conducted proving the medical benefits that marijuana provides to MS patients. Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Chemotherapy – It is widely accepted that the use of marijuana by cancer patients can be an effective way to combat nausea, sickness, and loss of appetite that patients typically suffer as a result of the chemotherapy. Patients state that the use of marijuana stimulates the appetite, reduces feelings of nausea, and brings a greater feeling of comfort.
4. Morning Sickness – 92% of women who used marijuana to combat feelings of morning sickness rated its use as “effective” or “very effective” in curbing the symptoms of the condition according to a study by the British Columbia Compassion Club Society.
5. Alzheimer’s Disease – A recent study found that tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient found in marijuana, prevents the production of an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase. This enzyme acts in the body to accelerate the creation of protein clumps and “Alzheimer’s plaques” – so by preventing the production of it, marijuana actively works to prevent the effects of Alzheimer’s.
6. Epilepsy – A study published by the Virginia Commonwealth University stated that many patients who suffered from epilepsy found that the use of marijuana helped to control the frequency and severity of seizures. Researchers cite both patients in America and internationally who choose this alternative form of medication and often discover positive results.
7. Arthritis – Patients who suffer from arthritis have stated that the use of marijuana helps them to deal with the pain and loss of sleep that can be suffered as a result of the disease. The pain killing and sleep inducing effects of marijuana have long been known, however many state the all-natural drug assists arthritis patients even more so.
8. Depression – A study performed jointly by the University of Southern California and the University of Albany concluded that “those who consume marijuana occasionally or even daily have lower levels of depressive symptoms than those who never tried marijuana”. This study is especially intriguing because it directly challenges a longstanding stereotype about marijuana users that categorizes them as downtrodden and depressed.
9. Hepatitis C – Studies performed by the University of California at San Francisco concluded that the use of marijuana by patients in addition with other Hepatitis C medications produced greater overall effects of the Hepatitis medication. The use of marijuana also contributed to lessened side effects from the medications, which include nausea, loss of appetite, and loss of sleep.
10. Anxiety – The anxiety argument is an interesting one, with many stating that marijuana helps to calm them down and reduce anxiety, and many stating just the opposite. While an article published by the Harvard Mental Health Letter reported that 20 to 30% of users suffered effects of anxiety, many will adamantly claim that they do not get any sense of anxiety from marijuana, and that it in fact helps to reduce their anxiety.
Marijuana, like all things, is not something that should be abused or administered in excessive amounts. However, when smoking a recreational amount, there are a very unique and diverse amount of benefits that smoking can bring to your health. Ultimately however, it is important to understand yourself and how your body works, to determine what will work best for you.
