Skunk#1 is one of the few essential must-have cannabis strains. It is an IBL and very stable. You will probably find that it is one of cheapest strains available. The cost of seeds vs results is like buying a vintage bottle of wine for a fraction of the price. This is the #1 skunk for all skunk love …continued

I have smoked cannabis for 25 years and have always wanted to grow some myself to see how it compares to the stuff I normally buy so here goes:

I decided to take the plunge and purchased a pack of Sensi Seeds Skunk #1 as a first time grow for just ?12.99. I chose this strain because I like Skunk and the seeds are really cheap. I had also heard of Sensi Seeds on trips to Amsterdam, and was told it was easy to grow. I did not want to spend lots of money on expensive seeds only to totally mess up by making mistakes on my first attempt. I thought that mistakes were inevitable so I was being a bit cautious.

I decided to germinate 8 of the little beauties. I pre-soaked the seeds in PH7 balanced warm water for 12 hours before planting in Seed Compost approximately 1cm below the surface and gave them a good watering. I covered the seeds with a clear plastic propagator lid and placed in a warm dark place. I kept the soil damp by topping up with water twice a day. After 4 days, 4 of the seeds had clearly emerged and a fifth could be seen trying to escape. One of the seedlings had its seed casing still attached to the top of the shoot and I decided to remove this with a sharp pencil at a later date if it didn?t dislodge itself. I then turned on 4 florescent lights at 20W each totalling 80W for 24/0 and waited to see if the remaining 3 seeds would emerge, but alas they did not so I gave up on these three. Germination rate was therefore 5 out of 8 = 62.5% The seedling which had the seed case attached eventually was killed when I chopped off its head by mistake trying to dislodge the seedcase from it? Ooops!

This only left me 4 seedlings out of 8 so for some strange reason (probably greed) I decided to germinate the remaining 8. This time I pre-soaked for 24 hours instead of 12 and had a much better germination rate of 7 out of 8 =87.5%

I now had eleven plants on the go at once and was soon to realise that my grow space was only big enough for about 6 plants! Doh! When I put these into full size buckets it was soon very obvious that I had about 5 too many plants but I decided to persevere anyway. By the end of the third week, the first batch attained a height of about 5 inches high and I then switched from flouros to my 600W HPS Growlux Lamp making sure it was at least 3 feet above the baby plants to avoid any sort of frying. I fed the plants with Miracle Grow once per week during vegetation and it seemed to work a treat, except care should be taken not to pour any of the water/miracle grow on the leaves when watering as this kill leaves within hours! (Oops again!)

One point to note here is that the plants started to smell after 4 weeks of vegetation! The smell soon filled my room and smelt like I had been smoking the stuff. Although I had a huge fan making lots of ventilation, I had to rush out and buy carbon filters, loads of air fresheners and a truck load of other products to keep the odor at bay so prevent my female lodger from becoming suspicious. I live in a small flat in a block of 50 flats, so odor is a big concern for me. This was even before flowering! Definitely not for the stealthy grower. I did love the smell though and spent ages each day in the grow room with my nose in the plants.

By the end of the sixth week, the 4 oldest plants had reached an impressive 10-12 inches height and I decided I would switch to flowering in just one week?s time. To prepare for flowering, I switched lights from 24/0 to 18/6 for last few days of vegetation, with no feeding other than plain ph7 water. Total Vegetation time was 7 weeks and at this stage, all plants were very bushy in appearance and nearly as wide as were tall. They mainly looked very healthy with only a couple of stragglers, but did need some urgent pruning as they had almost overgrown my grow space and I was urgently wishing they would show their sex so I could get rid of any males to make more room. All plants were very similar in size, shape and appearance, although some had thicker branches than others and one even collapsed even before flowering and needed support due to its weak main stem and a couple were runts and feeble looking. I could not see any real signs of sex during vegetation. I think that vegetation could have been speeded up by at least two weeks as I am a beginner and I under watered for the first 4 weeks due to the perlite in the soil drying out really quickly, and also started flowering a week too late. Next time I grow Skunk #1, I think that 5 weeks would be plenty enough for vegetation from seed, as after seven weeks my grow space was far too overcrowded and the plants just looked like one big sea of green. I did not intend for this to happen and next time I will set a limit of 6 plants in my grow space of 4×2 feet. One point to note here, is that the 600W HPS bulb is very bright just like the sun and can seriously damage your eyes when working in your grow room. I thoroughly recommend that you were dark sunglasses whilst working with your plants for any length of time.

At the start of flowering, I switched the lights to 12/12 and gave the plants a small dose of Terra Flores (approx 1/2 teaspoon per liter once per week, gradually increasing to 1 teaspoon per liter and two doses per week). After two weeks of flowering I could at long last see their sexes and discovered I had 6 females and 5 males. I was desperate to get rid of all the males to allow the females to breath again as they had not much space for expansion. The males were cut, dried and vaporized and I was left with 6 beautiful females. After 5 weeks I gave the plants a dose of PK 13/14 and just flushed for the last two weeks of flowering with just plain old ph7 water.

I harvested a fraction over 7 weeks of flowering (51 days). I cut the plants off, trimmed and hanged to dry upside down for 8 days before putting into glass jars and curing for a further 14 days.

Smoke Report

Wey Hey! A fantastic smelling Skunk. Brilliant taste and a great buzz, lots of laughs. A very smooth smoke with a nice uplifting/stoney high. I would definitely grow this strain again as it is unbeatable good value for money and miles better than any of the commercial stuff I have bought and makes me wonder why on earth didn?t I grow my own for the past 25 years!. Highly recommended for beginners and experts alike. Very easy to grow, delicious! Must vaporize some more hee hee!

Skunk #1… What can I say? Ill try to start off at the top.

Despite all the drawbacks I had with the plants, they still came out better then what I thought I would end up with. Everything that went wrong with the plants (you can pretty much see the effects in the photos) was totally my fault, I …continued

Overall good, classic strain.

Skunk #1 was very easy to grow. I had virtually no problems. She ate whatever I fed her. She was resistant to pests and she was definitely resistant to mould. During the last week of flowering it had rained a few days in a row with very low sunlight. But she was a ch …continued
