Here's a relatively easy way for Windows users
to defeat them.

There are still a huge number of government and other web sites that
use Double-Click to spy on visitors. Here's a relatively easy way for
Windows users to defeat them. (Sorry, I don't know much about Mac's, it may not
be possible to do this on them. Any Mac users know about this?).
First, look in the Windows\ directory for a file called, simply, Hosts,
no extension. If it is not there, create it there with Notepad. Make sure
that here is no extension to the filename (in Notepad, click SaveAs, then
change file types to ALL, then save the new file as Hosts in the Windows\
directory. Add the following lines to it:
127.0.0.1 ans1.adsoftware.com
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 servedby.advertising.com
127.0.0.1 m.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ans2.adsoftware.com
127.0.0.1 ans3.adsoftware.com
127.0.0.1 ans4.adsoftware.com
127.0.0.1 overflow.adsoftware.com
127.0.0.1 www.adsoftware.com
127.0.0.1 www.aureate.com
127.0.0.1 www.radiate.com
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
Note, the spacing is relatively important, as is the format. If you
have other spy software you want to block, while still using the software,
this works real good. For instance, I hate the ICQ ads and spyware, so I
added these lines:
127.0.0.1 ads.icq.com
127.0.0.1 cb.icq.com
127.0.0.1 cf.icq.com
ICQ still works fine, but now, no ads and no spying!
What this does is, if the Double-Click (or other spy-ware) tries to
access the 'net, this file tells Winsock to look at your own computer for
them! This effectively neuters the spyware, and protects your privacy.
Another spyware program is Aureate/Radiate. You can neuter this by
looking for and renaming a file ADVERT.DLL to ADVERTDLL.TMP. Then try the
software that uses this and if it works OK, your good to go. If not ... There
are some ways around it which I'll be testing out. If I find ways around
this spyware mess, I'll let you all know.
