Marijuana And The Laws
A Written College Term Paper Report About Cannabis & The Laws About MarijuanaByFarrah Enriquez
Dr. Andrew Luma Pos1041 MW 6-9:45 Marijuana and the laws It’s like a De Javou! Back in 1983 twenty years ago I did a research paper for my English 102 Course. My topic was “Marijuana should be discriminated”. Who would have thought twenty years later I be writing about the same topic, but with one twist. This time I want my readers to be the judge and decide for themselves who should decide for Marijuana to be illegal for people with different culture or a doctor or shaman prescribe a joint or two to sick and dying patient? It is written in our constitution, our freedom and government should not interfere with our religion or our way of living so long as it isn’t harming others? These are some of the questions that I like to click in my readers’ minds. The history of Marijuana goes back to 6 or 7 century B.C. Assyrians used the hemp as incense and Chinese Taoist used it to achieve immortality in first century. Even the Bible mentions the incense and the smoke when communicating with God. There are people that believe in this teaching of Bible. The Coptic Church believes “ with offering of devotion, ships from the isles will meet to pour the wealth of the nations and bring tribute to his feet.” They believe it is their daily obligations to burn hemps in to fire and hold hands and pray to God and Christ. The Coptic Church preaches that marijuana is a herb created by God from the start of the world. It is said to be the Weed of Wisdom, Angle’s Food, The Tree of life, and even the “Wicked Old Ganja Tree”. They believe God created marijuana just like any other herb for fire sacrifice during ceremonies so every one can inhale it. It is interesting enough to mention that Coptic Church doesn’t support any political or commercial organizations or follow any pagan religion. They insist that political organizations are the reason people are separated from their God. Because of this reason the church and the church followers are being harass and put in prison. The question that raises does government has the right to do what they are doing? It is against our constitution rights. Our Fist Amendment says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise there of, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievance.” Since the fight against legalization of marijuana is unwinable battle for our generation, we can only hope the science and technology catch up with knowledge that some patients with chronic pains or diagnosis with illness that has no cure knows already. Due to the work of law enforcement and political positions, it is very hard for the scientist to get permission from Food and Drug Administration to do studies on marijuana on human being. There are two studies right now being conducted by University of San Deigo medical school on marijuana and HIV patients. At least two is better than none and starting with HIV patients is better than nothing, mean while other patients will go to prison for what they know is good for them. There are eight states that are legal to use marijuana for medical purpose, but the growers go to jail. How can sick people grow marijuana by themselves? Federal and state laws make it so difficult that it is impossible to win. On the other hand, there are organizations and people that are risking their freedom to fight for what they believe. One of these organizations is American Alliance for Medical Cannabis or AAMC. is the Director of Florida Chapter for AAMC. As the director of AAMC he has set a web site www.onlinepot.org, which is an excellent site to go and find out what, are the legal issues regarding marijuana and medical policies in each states. What each activist or believer to this issue should do. I had an opportunity to talk to director Kenoyer and ask him about the Mission Statement and their goals. He said: “ …The primary mission of AAMC is patient advocacy, patient rights and support. Additional aspects of AAMC mission include clinical research and educating decision makers”. “ AAMC Activities to meet our mission include: Ongoing discussions with community leaders and government representatives to promote safe access to medicine while limiting diversion, creation and distribution of education materials, provision of an internet website, planning and conducting medical marijuana schools for the general public, law enforcements, caregivers, health professionals and patients, Identifications of medical, social, and legal resources for patients and caregivers, assistance to hospice facilities and other patients facilities and much more.” The sense I got from talking to Director Kenoyer was all he cared was making sure who ever is in pain has right to choice the best way to feel better. At the conclusion, I like to mention we shouldn’t forget what our founding fathers wanted us to have. They wanted us to have our freedom to choice and have the right to practice whatever religion we decide to have without being scared of the government. Marijuana is an herb that is being used by the drug czars and politicians to make money and not what God intended to be. Studies show that smoking marijuana is less harmful than cigarette. It is not addictive like alcohol and it is actually relaxes the people. Just like any drug or alcohol, children should not use it, or adult operate machinery. If we as a society could understand marijuana the way God intended us to use it, may be our prison system wouldn’t be full and there wouldn’t be as much crimes. Finally, yet importantly, I have to mention that last year state of Washington passed the medical marijuana law and it is the first year that state is out of deficit. That should be something to reconsider. May be some day people can live with a government that can trust its citizens to make their own mind about their religion, medicine and even the way they want to have fun.
