Sex differences in the effects of marijuana on simulated driving
performance.
Anderson BM, Rizzo M, Block RI, Pearlson GD, O'Leary DS.
Subjects were tasked with various driving tasks, such as approaching
a changing traffic light, avoiding a dog, responding to an emergency
vehicle, responding to a vehicle enters an intersection, driving
while encountering a secondary (in the car) distraction, etc.
Bottom line, much to authors clear disappointment, subjects performed
the same after smoking marijuana as they did at baseline on every
single task. In fact, the only outcome measurement that differed was
that marijuana smoking was associated with slower driving!
"No sex differences or interactions of sex and marijuana were
observed for any of the driving tasks. Participants receiving active
marijuana decreased their speed more so than those receiving the
placebo cigarette during a distracted section of the drive. An
overall effect of marijuana was seen for the mean speed during the
distracted driving (PASAT section). [N]o other changes in driving
performance were found."
Naturally, these are NOT the sort of findings that the researchers
want to publicize. Rather, they must find some outcome - any outcome
- supporting the hypothesis that so-called drugged driving under the
influence of cannabis is so significant that we must continue the
practice of locking up folks who use pot in the privacy of their
homes, or who drive with the presence of inactive marijuana
byproducts in their urine.
So, how do they do it? By stating that the fact that subjects
performed THE SAME after smoking marijuana is evidence that they were
IMPAIRED!
"Persons smoking the placebo cigarette showed an improvement in
performance of the PASAT [this was the secondary distraction test -
which was just one of the battery of tests] during the driving task,
likely attributable to practice effects. Under the influence of
marijuana, however, no differences were found between PASAT
performance during practice testing and while driving. Participants
who smoked active marijuana decreased their speed during this section
of the drive, suggesting additional compensatory skills were used."
Authors went on to hypothesize that the overall lack of differences
in driving behavior was further irrelevant because "seldom is
marijuana the only drug being used while driving. Often marijuana is
combined with alcohol." Okay, well then why didn't you have your
subjects smoke marijuana and drink alcohol and test them if that is
really your concern??!! They also added that cannabis likely impacts
psychomotor functions - just that these must have been "other driving
abilities not tested."
Get it!? So, noting that the study found no differences in objective
driving outcomes, the conclusion of the study nonetheless of rails on
and on about the supposed adverse impact of marijuana on - you
guessed it - driving performance. And the best part is that this
finding is based on the fact that A) the subjects drove more slowly
(shudder!) after using marijuana, and B) performed at the SAME LEVEL
AFTER SMOKING AS THEY DID PRIOR TO SMOKING.
Don't believe me? Read it in black and white
"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
This study assessed sex differences in the effects of acute marijuana
use on driving performance in a double- blinded, placebo controlled,
between-subjects design. Under the influence of active marijuana,
participants exhibited increased drowsiness, although this did not
appear to affect their driving. Participants under the influence of
marijuana failed to benefit from prior experience on a distracter
task as evidenced by a decrease in speed and a failure to show
expected practice effects. This study supports the existing
literature that marijuana does affect simulated driving performance,
[emphasis mine!] particularly on complex tasks such as divided
attention, it is anticipated that many teenagers and young adults
driving under the influence of marijuana are doing so while
conversing with friends in the car, listening to music, talking on
the cell phone and/or text messaging others. These behaviors divide
the driver's attention and are particularly dangerous under the
influence of marijuana."
I have the full text of the study if anyone wants to read it for themselves.
Enjoy!
