Urgent Maine State Officials Trying To Sabotage
In November 2009, Maine voters showed their overwhelming support for giving qualified patients safe and reliable access to medical marijuana. Now,
several state officials on the commission charged with implementing the
law are trying to Governor Baldacci created the Committee on the Implementation of the Maine Medical Marijuana Act to advise him on issues surrounding medical marijuana including the development of rules and regulations governing the establishment and operation of nonprofit medical marijuana dispensaries. But some members of the Committee are letting their own irrational fears and prejudices get in the way of meeting the needs of patients and providers. A small group of Committee members, led by Attorney General Janet Mills and Rep. Anne Haskell have been pushing for changes in the law including: -- Allowing police to search dispensaries and the homes of medical marijuana patients' caregivers without a warrant. -- Requiring caregivers who want to help their family members, neighbors, and friends have access to medical marijuana to register with the state and comply with a set of complex and stringent regulations. -- Placing a one year moratorium on allowing the use of marijuana for new medical conditions no matter how much scientific evidence doctors and patients present and no matter how much patients are suffering. -- Putting all the state's medical marijuana production in the hands of a few large scale commercial greenhouses under strict state control instead of letting Maine farmers do what they do best. The members of this committee are public servants, charged with implementing the will of Maine's voters. They work for us! And they need to hear that Mainers want medical marijuana patients and providers treated with dignity and respect! E-mail the members of the Commission today and tell them that these changes are unacceptable! Be polite but firm. Let them know that you are holding them accountable for making sure the needs of patients come first in this process: Rep. Anne Perry -- aperry@maineline.net
