You could skip an exterior
lock altogether if you go with a magnetic lock on the inside of the door. You
can control it with an RF pass key, also called a "proximity access
control". You've seen these things going into buildings; you wave a small
card near a sensor, it clicks a 12V relay that's wired to the magnetic door
lock.
The trick here is that your sensor is *inside* your closet, out of sight, but
close enough to door that the RF key reads - you can test this before connecting
the lock.
Sounds complex, but I have done this and it is very easy!
Such a solution can be put together pretty cheaply, using Ebay and smarthome.com
and froogle.com to search for low prices. For example, google turned up this
example of a cheap proximity system: http://www.smarthome.com/7434.html
- the manual is available there online too so you can see ahead of time how
simple it is to wire up. You ought to be able to set this up for less than $150.
The magnetic lock systems are available in different strengths, typically
holding 300 - 600 pounds or more, which is pretty damn strong.
Set up something like this and you won't have any lock visible, plus only you
will know where to wave the magic key. As an added benefit, everything is
surface mounted, so you don't have to do any cutting, just a few screw holes
that can be patched later if you ever need to remove the system.
