B. C. ACTIVIST WILL CONTINUE TO LEAD MARIJUANA PARTY FROM HIS PRISON CELL

Marc Emery says he intends to stay on as president of the B. C. Marijuana Party while in prison.
The Vancouver pot activist announced this week that he will plead guilty to one of three drug-related charges against him --one count of distributing marijuana--in a Seattle courtroom in August. He likely will be sentenced in September or October.
Despite the possibility that he will be in prison for anywhere from three to six years, Mr. Emery said he can continue to run the party. "It'll be affected by my absence but I'll still be president and party leader," he said.
Mr. Emery said the party will continue to support the Green party at the provincial level and support Green and NDP candidates in the next federal election. The charge to which he will please guilty relates to a mail-order business selling marijuana seeds to people in the United States and Canada from 1998 to 2005.

Although Canadians are hardly trading maple leaves for pot leaves,
newly published findings suggest Cheech and Chong would feel right at
home here. In a country-wide survey, an overwhelming 93 per cent of Canadians
indicated they accept the idea of people legally smoking marijuana
for health reasons. Nearly three in four (70 per cent) not only
accept the practice but also personally approve of the behavior.
Support for the overall legalization of marijuana is also strong,
with almost half of Canucks giving it a hearty thumbs up -- the same
percentage of people who, in a 2004 Health Canada sponsored survey
were found to have smoked cannabis in their lifetime.
